Most Important History to Teach Kids

When I was growing up, I didn’t learn much about Church History. For that reason, I wanted my kids to know something about their Christian heritage. It might not be American History or World History, but Church History is the most important history we should teach our kids in Christian families.

The stories of faith, perseverance, and devotion that have shaped the Church throughout history serve as both inspiration and guidance for young minds. By teaching our kids about the men and women who stood firm in their beliefs, we not only connect them to their spiritual roots but also equip them to face the challenges of today’s world with faith and courage.

To help you get started teaching church history, watch this podcast I recently published.\

This journey through Christian history helps them understand who they are in Christ and the powerful legacy they inherit.

But how do you really teach that?

The easiest way I know is to read stories and add some fun activities. Let’s start with some of our favorite Church History books … at all ages.

Overview of Church History

Trial & Triumph Perfect for families & young kids. Great place to start!
Church History in Plain Language Great for adults & teen (I’ve read this 3 times)

Board Books

I recently discovered these fun books. I wanted to give my grandkids some books that shared my faith, that shared my Christian heritage. My grands love these books.

The Woman Who Helped a Reformer
The Man Who Preached Outside
The Woman Who Loved To Give Books

Picture Books

There are many books in this series. These are just a few that tell the story of a courageous Christian who overcame difficult circumstances in their stand for Jesus.

Fanny Crosby: Girl Who Couldn’t See But Helped the World to Sing
Amy Carmichael: Brown Eyed Girl who learned to Pray
Betsey Stockton – Girl with a Missionary Dream

Church History Books for Kids

Let’s be honest! This is a fraction of the great books about our Christian fathers & mothers over time. It is a great place to start, so pick one and read it aloud to your family.

It really is that simple.

Augustine, Farmer Boy of Tagaste
St Patrick Pioneer Missionary to Ireland
Augustine Came to Kent
Morning Star of Reformation (John Wycliffe)
The River of Grace (John Calvin)
Kitty My Rib (Kitty Luther)
A Piece of the Mountain (Blaise Pascal)
Along Came Galileo
Mr Pipes and Psalms and Hymns of the Reformation
YWAM: David Livingstone

By sharing these biographies and church history resources with your children, you are nurturing a love for their Christian heritage that will strengthen their faith and understanding. Learning about the sacrifices, triumphs, and unwavering faith of those who came before can inspire them to live out their own faith with conviction and purpose.

The past is not merely a story to be told, but a foundation to be built upon, one that will help guide your children in their walk with God for years to come.
