Let me tell you…this one is really hard. After reading aloud as a family for over 10 years, we’ve read a lot of books. I asked each of my kids to send me the top 10 read alouds from a list I sent them. We probably read over 100 books while the kids were at home.
I’ll start with my list – “Mom’s List”
(in no particular order)
- Cat of Bubastes
- Adventures of Robin Hood
- Treasures of the Snow
- Little Women
- Johnny Tremain
- Little Britches series
- The Witch of Blackbird Pond
- The Story of Liberty
- Where the Red Fern Grows
- Taming of the Shrew
There are so many good books we’ve read aloud, it is very hard to just choose 10.
Only one of my kids picked only 10. What does that say about my kids following directions???
Or, about how much they liked books???
Before I list Hunter’s (19 yo) favorite read alouds, let me share what he said when I asked him for his top 10.
In all seriousness, he looked at me and asked, “what books did we read”?
Really!?!? I looked at him and asked, “don’t you remember any books we read aloud”?
He said, “Jotham’s Journey“. We laughed because we read that book 2 or 3 times over several Christmases.
Once he looked at our list of books, here’s Hunter’s top 10 (or top dozen). Some of these surprised me…
- Courage of Sarah Noble
- The Sign of the Beaver
- Paddle to the Sea (water related)
- Freedom Train – I knew he’d put this on the list
- The Hiding Place
- Swiss Family Robinson – (water related)…of course it’s on Hunter’s list
- Little Britches series, including Man of the Family & The Home Ranch
- A Christmas Carol
- Treasure Island (water related)
- The Hobbit – don’t all boys like this one?
- Adventures of Tom Sawyer
- Beowulf
Gentry (22 yo) was & still is my biggest reader. She liked so many books, I’m surprised she narrowed it down.
- Heidi
- With Lee in Virginia
- Johnny Tremain
- Little Britches series – do you see a pattern here?
- The Lion, The Witch, & The Wardrobe
- Where the Red Fern Grows
- God’s Smuggler
- The Hiding Place
- Jotham’s Journey
- The Witch of Blackbird Pond
Ashley (24 yo) is now married and says she balked about reading. Now she is very thankful. Here’s her list.
Sign of the Beaver
- Toliver’s Secret
- Walk the World’s Rim
- Little Women
- Johnny Tremain
- Little Britches series
- For the Temple
- Eagle of the Ninth (now titled The Eagle)
- Where the Red Fern Grows – another pattern
- God’s Smuggler
- The Hiding Place
- Jotham’s Journey – and yet another family fav
- Little House on the Prairie
- Carry A Big Stick
In looking at these lists, I noticed Little Britches on all our lists. Steve read this series for several years in the evening. Great Books!
A few others that made most of our lists included Where The Red Fern Grows, Jotham’s Journey, The Hiding Place and Johnny Tremain.
