What is Passover {Books to Read the Passover Story}

Earlier this week I was picking up some books to read. Good ol’ fiction novels.  While I was there, I decided to run upstairs to see what books they may have for kids that answers the question, “What is Passover?”

Let me share my favorites and ideas to celebrate Passover this year.

My First Passover
by Tomie de Paola

I like most of Tomie dePaola books because they’re written well and they retell history or folk stories. Besides, the art work is wonderful..

My First Passover is a board book that gives a very simple explanation of the Passover meal. It covers the parts of the Passover feast, as well as a simple description of the First Passover in the Old Testament.  Great book for preschoolers.

The following books cover the major parts of Passover, along with an adult explanation of what is Passover at the back of each book.

• Kids searching for hidden matzah bread

Passover
by Miriam Nerlove

Intended for the very young, Passover is an introduction to this traditional Jewish holiday, told in rhyming verses.

Nerlove begins telling the Old Testament story of Passover, then she moves to how we celebrate Passover today.

The house is cleaned, the table is set with the Seder Plate, matzoh ball soup and gefilte fish are served, the story of the Exodus from Egypt is read, the afikomen is hidden and found, and the prophet Elijah is welcomed inside.

Great book for young kids to understand Passover.

Christ in the Passover, by Moshe Roisen – Resource for your family to learn more about Christ in the Passover.  Moishe is the founder of Jews for Jesus.

I still remember Mr. Rosen coming to my parents’ home when I was a teenager.  It was fascinating to meet a Jew who had become a Christian & hear him talk about Passover.

 Celebrating Passover

A few years ago I found an awesome plate that integrates Passover with the New Testament.  See the Hebrew letters throughout and the Bible verses around the edge. Why not invest in your own Seder Plate that you can use to celebrate the Passover.

I loved sharing Passover with my kids because it gave them new insights into the Israelites leaving Egypt & God’s salvation of mankind.

Yesterday I ordered the matching Passover Cup so we can use it this year during Passion Week.
