Summer Activities for Kids - homemade playdough

Here’s a fun recipe on how to make your own homemade playdough! This recipe involves cooking the playdough because it has a better texture. However, we do have an uncooked recipe if you want to try it too: http://www.instructables.com/id/Easy-Affordable-Play-Dough/

You will need:

  • 2 cups flower
  • 2 cups warm water
  • 1 cup salt
  • 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil
  • 1 tablespoon cream of tartar (optional…but helps with the elasticity)
  • food coloring (liquid, powder, or unsweetened drink mix)
  • scented oils

Mix all ingredients over low heat. The dough will begin to thicken and look like mashed potatoes. When dough pulls away from the sides and clumps in the center, remove it from the heat and allow it to cool. If your dough is still sticky it needs to cook longer. Keep stirring and cooking until it’s dry and feels like playdough.

Turn the dough onto your counter and kneed it vigorously until it becomes silky smooth. Divide into ball in order to color it. Make a divot in the center of the ball and drop food coloring in it. Fold the dough over and work the coloring throughout the body of the dough. You can use gloves or plastic wrap to keep things clean. Add more food coloring to get the color you want. Now you’re ready to play!

Store your playdough in an air-tight container. You can also cook your playdough in the oven in order to make figures and paint them.
