10 Rest and Renewal Tips – Homeschool Moms

Homeschool Bootcamp

If you’re like me, your days are packed with responsibilities. Super-busy…juggling lesson plans, household chores, meal prep, and, of course, caring for your kids. It’s easy to put yourself last on the list—instead of finding ways for you to find rest and renewal.

After all, there’s always more to do.

10 rest and renewal tips for homeschool moms

But God designed us for balance. Yes, you are called to care for your family, but God also calls you to care for yourselves. In fact, rest is essential for the physical, emotional, and spiritual health needed to be the best wife, mom, and homeschool teacher you can be.

In repentance and rest is your salvation, in quietness and trust is your strength

Isaiah 30:15

While the idea of resting, or taking a “break”, can seem impossible with so many things on your plate, it’s important to remember that God honors rest. Jesus Himself took time to withdraw from the crowds and refresh His spirit (Mark 6:31). In the same way, you should find ways to refresh yourselves so you can do the best job possible fr your kid.

I wished I had learned this lesson when my kids were still at home. Don’t make the same mistake I made. Find rest and renewal for yourself on a regular basis.

Let’s talk about how you can plan God-Honoring Rest and Renewal in a way that follows the Bible …. that honors both your needs and your calling as a homeschooling mom.

Understanding God’s Design for Rest and Renewal

Before diving into practical ways to rest, it’s helpful that you recognize that God values rest. The Bible makes it clear that rest is not only a good thing but part of His plan for us.

God commands us to take a Sabbath rest. Even unbelievers see the value of a Sabbath rest. If you want more ideas on how to incorporate Sabbath rest into a family, check out John Mark Comer and his Garden City.

Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy.

Exodus 20:8

Not only do we see rest in the Old Testament, Jesus tells His disciples to “come away by yourselves to a desolate place and rest a while.” Mark 6:31

As homeschool moms, rest isn’t just a luxury—rest is a necessity. It’s not selfish. It’s an essential part of honoring God with the body He gave you. Remember, a mind and body that are well-rested are better equipped to serve your family and serve God’s calling in your life.

Practical Ways to Incorporate Rest In Your Busy Homeschool Schedule

Homeschooling is demanding. Finding space for rest in a busy day may feel impossible. However, small, intentional moments of rest throughout the day can make a big difference.

Start with Small, Intentional Breaks

You don’t need hours of free time to feel renewed. Start with small, intentional breaks that are easy to fit into your day.

For example, during a break in the homeschool schedule, take a quick moment to pause and refresh your spirit. Use the YouVersion app and it’s verse of the day. Just open and walk through the 5 minute prompts.

Use these short breaks to refocus your mind on God’s purpose for your day.

Set Boundaries Around School Time

Create specific windows in your day where you can step away from homeschooling. Let your kids know that for 15-20 minutes, you are taking a “rest time” for yourself.

For me, I took time off in the afternoon. When the kids were young, they had a minimum of 1 hour in their bedroom. As they grew up, I had more time to refresh and renew.

During this time, avoid answering emails, messages, or doing anything else related to homeschool tasks. I could spend 15 minutes of my 1 hour quiet time taking a power nap or reading or praying. Then, I had 45 minutes to take care of other responsibilities.

10 Quick Self-Care Ideas You Can Actually Do

Here are some simple, God-honoring ways to recharge your spirit and body without requiring a huge time commitment. These tips will help you feel renewed, refreshed, and ready to dive back into homeschooling with energy and focus.

  • 5-Minute Reset: Pause for a moment to breathe deeply. Close your eyes and breathe in slowly, offering a quick prayer to God, asking for peace and strength. I often do this when I got to the bathroom. I know. That may seem strange, but it hooks the Bible into something I do all day long.
Focus on a Bible verse like Psalm 46:10: “Be still, and know that I am God.” This quick reset will center your mind and help you find peace.
  • Cup of Comfort: Take a few minutes to enjoy your favorite beverage, whether it’s coffee, tea, or water. Sip slowly and mindfully, allowing yourself to just be present in the moment. Use this time to reflect or offer thanks for the little moments in your day.
  • Step Outside: Take a 10-minute walk around your yard, your block or your neighborhood. Feel the sun on your face and breathe in fresh air. Nature has a way of calming and rejuvenating our spirits, and a quick walk can give you a fresh perspective. I love walking outside. It always refreshes me.
  • Creative Spark: If you love to create, take a few minutes to color, doodle, or journal one page in a notebook. You don’t need to make it a big project—just allow yourself to express your creativity without any pressure.
  • Mini Reading Break: Step away from homeschooling materials and read a chapter of a book you love—nothing related to curriculum! Whether it’s fiction, devotionals, or an inspirational book, reading something that brings joy can refresh your mind. I treat myself to reading in bed on Saturday mornings.
  • Movement Break: Take a 5-minute dance break with some upbeat worship music or your favorite songs. Stretch, move around, or even do some simple yoga poses. Getting your body moving can boost your energy and mood.
  • Phone-Free Zone: Put your phone away for 30 minutes, or more. Ideally, put your phone away from wherever you homeschool. Your kids will thank you! Avoid the temptation to scroll through social media or check messages. This time without distractions will allow your mind to reset and help you feel more present with your family.
  • Beauty Boost: Take a few minutes to refresh yourself with a quick beauty ritual. Back in the 60’s and 70’s, my mom did her hair and makeup every afternoon before my dad came home. I followerd her example. Or, youo might put on lipstick or some simple earrings, or wear an outfit that makes you feel confident—this is a quick way to boost your mood and feel rejuvenated, even while at home.
  • Music Therapy: Play some worship music or your favorite upbeat songs. Let the music fill your home and refresh your spirit. Music has the power to soothe, uplift, and restore joy.
  • Gratitude List: My favorite since 2010!! Take a moment to jot down three things you’re thankful everyday. Reflecting on your blessings helps refocus your heart and reminds you of God’s goodness, no matter what challenges you may be facing.

The last one, a gratitude list or journal, is my number one recommendation. Gratitude will refresh and renew you in ways you can’t imagine!

10 rest and renewal tips for homeschool moms

Get the Family Involved

Biblical rest doesn’t just benefit you—it can benefit your entire family. Set aside time where the whole family takes a break. Our family took a “family Sabbath” on Sundays after church. We feasted at lunch with another family and took it easy the rest of they day. I’m thankful to see that my kids are following a similar example … in their own way.

Consistency: Most Important Tip for Real Rest & Renewal

Rest isn’t just something to do when you’re exhausted; it’s something to incorporate into your daily routine.

Homeschool moms need rest every week.

Consistency in carving out time for rest is the key to long-term renewal. It may take time to build this rhythm into your day, but this is the most important tip I am sharing, besides gratitude. Over time, your kids may not understand what is happening, but they will experience the benefit or you being rested…not freaking out over small things.

Embrace Rest and Renewal

Rest and renewal are not only beneficial to your own health but also essential for living out your calling as a homeschool mom. My suggestion is to intentionally carve out time for God-honoring rest and renewal.

You’ll refresh your spirit AND model healthy habits for your children. Modeling rest and renewal will have much more impact than academics. Don’t wait!

It’s not about taking a break from your responsibilities—it’s about honoring God by caring for the body, mind, and spirit He has entrusted to you.

Embrace these simple but effective ways to rest and renew. Schedule these moments of peace into your daily rhythm. Don’t feel guilty for taking the time you need. As you make God-honoring rest a priority, you’ll find more energy, patience, and joy in the homeschool journey—and more peace in your heart.

Now is the time to schedule your first step toward rest and renewal!
