How To Homeschool My Child

Top 3 Back to School Ideas

I know some of you homeschool year round, but I liked taking rest during the summer. I was more of a Labor Day to Memorial Day homeschooler, taking a “Sabbath” during the summer. My kids still learned during the summer, but that’s another post.

I love August as a back to school time.

New school supplies…

New outfit…

New tennis shoes…

New school books…

What back to school traditions do you have in your homeschool?  Here are our Top 3 Back to School Ideas . . . David Letterman style!

3.  First Day of School Photo

You probably take a photo the first day of school, each year.  We took a photo in the entry hall…in the exact same spot every year.  When Hunter was a senior, he quickly went to the front door for his first day of school photo.

If you are on pinterest, you’ll find some very creative first day of school photo ideas. I hope my grandkids use some of those ideas.

2.  Back to School Lunch

I took this idea from my mom. She took each of us kids to lunch before school started. It was one of her back to school ideas, to spend individual time with each of us.

I still remember sitting in the Walgreens diner at Memorial City Mall in Houston. We never splurged to eat at the diner where you could talk to people walking by in the mall.  I thought I was so important in that diner.

When my kids started school, I took them to lunch . . . by themselves. After lunch we went shopping for school supplies or a new outfit.

In fact, I hope to have lunch with Hunter next week, before he starts his semester at Texas A&M. Why end a good back to school tradition when your kids still live close by?

1.  First Day of School Breakfast

Yep, breakfast on the first day of school is our #1 Back to School Tradition. You might wonder why, so let me tell you.

About 15 years ago, my kids came to the breakfast table and saw ice cream sundaes on the table.

They were shocked.  Ice cream for breakfast. Has mom gone mad?

No, I recently read an article about adding fun to your family life. Do something shocking like serving popcorn for breakfast.  I thought ice cream sundaes would be better.

Ever since, we’ve had ice cream sundaes for the first day of school breakfast. Even when Hunter was the only one at home for his senior year, I had ice cream and toppings for breakfast.

We had donuts for breakfast this year. I think that will be our new tradition 🙂 I love the back to school photos, I’m going to have to start doing that next year!

We have enjoyed your ice cream Sunday idea for two years, but this year I am thinking of Crepes served with whip cream from the can. This is hard for me because I like fresh whipped cream from the cow! Kids love this spray stuff and they will go crazy to see it on the table. Plus chocolate chips, berries, sprinkles and homemade syrup. Another thing I do is purchase a craft that the kids will do after breakfast for art. This is usually something they will get to use for the year. Last year we made our brown recycled notebooks come alive with decorative tape. Kids had a blast and they used them for science observations! Hats off to a great school year 2014 – 2015… here we come!!!

So glad you’ve enjoyed our ice cream for breakfast ideas. Crepes sound delicious & my kids would’ve preferred cream from a can, too. I love the idea of doing a craft after breakfast. Thanks for sharing!

We homeschool year-round, but on the first day of public school here we go with other homeschool friends to Chuck E. Cheese. The kids enjoy socializing and so do the moms. 🙂

When I was homeschooling, I hosted a Not-Back to School pool party for homeschoolers. We rented a local pool for the morning & had a fantastic time.

I never thought to do a special “back-to-school” tradition. I just set a date, and we started. We always go slow the first few weeks. I used to homeschool year round, but then we had boys and bought a small homestead, and I NEED the summer break for my sanity, and our homestead. 🙂
But now, I just may have to start a tradition. Maybe I’ll ask the kids for suggestions. And I love the idea of a picture in the same spot each year. How fun!

    • Kerry Beck says:

I hope you choose an activity all of you will enjoy each year when school starts. Once you decide with your kids, let me know what it is.

we are having an icecream social for the homeschoolers in our town. Individually I like to start off with a cool science experiment.
