If I Had to Do It All Over – Advent Calendars for Next Year on Sale

After using some new advent calendars this year, I discovered how I will use them next year.  I thought you might like to plan ahead, as well as grab a few resources while they are on sale.

We used the flipchart advent calendar and magnetic advent calendar this year from Love Came Down by DaySpring.

Here’s how I will use them next year . . .

 advent calendars

At Breakfast or Lunch . . .I will use the “Names of God” advent calendar.  It sits on our refrigerator and we take turns opening the daily door.  We will read the name of God on the outside of the door.  Then, read the verse inside the door.

This can be a laid-back time I can have with my kids, mom & kids.  Each day you can

  • Discuss the new name of God
  • Discuss examples of how God exhibits that character quality
  • Review previous names of God
  • Memorize Isaiah 9:6-7 – includes several of the names of God on the advent calendar

For unto us a Child is born, unto us a Son is given; and the government will be upon His shoulder.
And His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
Of the increase of His government and peace there will be no end,
Upon the throne of David and over His kingdom, to order it and establish it with righteousness and justice from that time forward, even forever.  The zeal of the Lord of hosts will perform this.

If you want to use it in your homeschool next year, you can use the names & verses as copywork or memory work.

“A beautiful gift and an encouraging message therein for each day up to Christmas”

How To Use Advent Calendar Flipchart

At Dinner . . . We will read the verse on the flipchart with Dad.  Since we linger more at dinner time, we have more time to discuss the verse &/or questions on the flipchart.

For us, the flipchart fits our time with Steve because it sits on our table all the time.  If we don’t like the questions included, Steve can ask a different question.  This year, we had some interesting discussions about the verses on the flipchart.

If also saw the flipchart is on sale too – for 50%.  Click here for the link to save 50%.    http://ow.ly/go6ST

“‘Why let the kids have all the fun? This beautiful Advent calendar can be used year after year. Sturdy. Inspirational. Great gift.”

  1. If you are looking for a way to engage the entire family, encourage anticipation of Christ’s birth and have some engaging reflective questions that help keep the true meaning of Christmas the focus of the family advent activities then Arnold Ytreeide’s trilogy of books is a great option.

For Advent, there are three books in the series interconnected through Jotham’s Journey, Bartholomew’s Passage and Tabitha’s travels. The whole family enjoys reading them together as the storyline and the reflection questions help keep everyone focused on the true meaning of Christmas.

For Easter he wrote another book that is also connected to the Advent books called Amon’s Adventure. In this book Amon is Jotham’s son grown up and a witness to Jesus’s death, burial and resurrection.

Excellent way to spend time as a family in anticipation for Christ’s birth and resurrection!

    1. Kelly,
Thanks for reminding everyone of Jotham’s Journey…an excellent advent resource. As you can read on earlier posts, this is one of our family favorites. When I asked my kids for their top 10 books over the years, ALL 3 of them listed Jotham’s Journey. It’s the only book that was on all 3 lists.

We didn’t care as much for the next 2, so we read Jotham over & over again. I am ordering the Easter one to review before this coming Easter. It wasn’t written when our kids were home.
